Symposium focused on using cross-border partnerships to grow Canadian life sciences sector

TORONTO, ON – The American Chamber of Commerce in Canada held a symposium today on US-Canadian partnerships in the life sciences ecosystem. The symposium was hosted by Johnson & Johnson Innovation JLABS @ Toronto, and attended by US Ambassador Kelly Craft, Federal Minister of Finance Bill Morneau, and Ontario Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade Todd Smith.

The US-Canada Life Sciences Synergies Symposium focused on US industry’s contributions to the Canadian life sciences sector. It helped increase awareness and understanding of the significant contributions of US-based life sciences firms to innovation in Canada. The symposium also highlighted opportunities for investment, collaboration, and growth in the Canadian life sciences ecosystem, through partnership with US industry.

Rick Tachuk, Chair, AmCham Canada said, “Today’s symposium was a resounding success. We were pleased to hear not only from key life sciences leaders, but also from US Ambassador Craft, as well as our federal government on the importance of investing in Canada’s life sciences ecosystem. Leveraging the interconnectedness of this ecosystem across the US-Canada border is crucial to creating innovative treatments and medical technologies, as well as many high-skilled jobs in Canada.”

Andrew Casey, President of BIOTECanada, said, “Symposiums like these bring together key leaders from the life sciences ecosystem and from the political realm to highlight the innovative work coming out of our sector. Today’s symposium emphasized the importance of working across borders to innovate and create opportunities for investment.”

The life sciences ecosystem spans both the US and Canada and is an integral part of both countries’ economies.
